Teen Challenge

How do you cross a raging river of alligators? Just ask any KCCHA "Teen Challenge" member. This innovative, proactive, pro-social program is designed to work with at-risk teens in an effort to prevent juvenile delinquency and involvement with substance abuse.

It effectively joins together youth and adults from ethnically, socially and economically diverse backgrounds, focusing on building self-confidence and trust among peers and adult mentors. Youth experience personal growth, leadership development, recreation, and community service.

The success comes as the youth achieve individual goals and obtain a sense of team spirit working together in accomplishing challenging dilemmas!

One KCCHA staff member and three community volunteers facilitate the project. The group meets twice a month for a 6-month period, providing safe and drug free events and programming for low-income and at-risk youth. Each young person is viewed as a valuable asset to the program and group. "Teen Challenge" is based on an ongoing experiential program using the Portable Challenge Master Training. This is an adventure-based educational program used to enhance recreational, therapeutic and other educational programs.

Youth participate in a series of challenges and activities that motivate them to step beyond their previously believed limits. The focus of this program is to build self-confidence, trust and bonding among peers and adult mentors as well as group cooperation and the ability to function as a team. Cooperation rather than competition is the focal point. Value and respect for each other is instilled verses competition.
