Titled Summer Smiles, our cover photo was one of the top winners in the 1997 National HUD Photo contest Community Services Director, Deborah Howard took the photo during the "Summer Smiles" recreational youth program which was designed to address the needs of the children in the neighborhood of Nollwood. This program was awarded the 1997 Regional NAHRO Merit Award for Resident Programs. The focus was to reenergize the summer lunch program and provide a well rounded eight-week recreational program through creative community collaboration. The Youth Volunteer Corps was instrumental in providing leadership, positive role models and a lot of fun for these children.

Approximately 60 children participated on a daily basis. the result was a happy, healthy summer of organized activities that improved group interaction thereby reducing on-site youth problems that lead to criminal activity or drug involvement.
